Balloons 4 Hearts Appeal

In 2005, the cardiac department submitted a bid to the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Trust Board to establish Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) at the NNUH. This procedure had been well established in centres already providing cardiac surgical services. This is described in greater detail in the section describing the history of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. The Hospital Trust was very supportive of this proposal, resulting in the establishment of the Balloons4Hearts Appeal (B4H), and a target of £1 million was necessary to provide Xray equipment for two operating rooms. NHT undertook to provide the charitable status to facilitate the raising of this sum, which was completed by May 2008. Thanks are due to the Appeal Committee for their hard work and particularly to Mrs Madeleine Skipper, the Appeal Coordinator. Having achieved the goal of equipping the angioplasty suite, the appeal closed, allowing residual projects to continue in order to reach fruition. The NHT continues to act as the responsible Charity and its aim is to continue the good work of B4H as set out in this web site.

The appeal was fortunate to receive major donations from the Geoffrey Watling Trust, the Palgrave Brown Foundation and the Kirby Laing Foundation as well as substantial ones from several other charities. In the last months of the appeal we received large donations from Land Securities Trillium, the Bertram Charitable Trust and an anonymous donor which enabled the target to be achieved. Tribute must be paid for unstinting support for NHT from Norfolk Labels, now Paragon Print and Packaging, and its one time Managing Director Mr Jack Parker.

However a very substantial element of this £1 million was raised as a result of very generous donations from members of the public, Societies, Clubs etc in sums of less than £500. This was a most magnificent effort and the NNUH, NHT and all the patients who have received or are likely to receive treatment from the PCI service will forever be grateful for the hard work of the fund raisers.
